What is 5G?
The fifth generation of mobile networks promises huge speed and very low latency. What 5G really is, how it differs from 4G, and what it's for.
It shows up on your phone’s screen, in ads, and in the news: “5G.” It’s talked about as a revolution, but many people aren’t clear on what exactly it is or how it improves on what we already had. Let’s explain it simply, without jargon.
The fifth generation
5G is, simply put, the fifth generation of mobile phone networks. It’s the successor to 4G, just as 4G was to 3G, and so on back. Each generation has meant a big leap:
- 1G: analog voice calls.
- 2G: digital calls and text messages (SMS).
- 3G: mobile internet arrived.
- 4G: fast internet, video, and apps.
- 5G: huge speed, near-instant response, and the capacity to connect vast numbers of devices.
Its three big advantages
What does 5G improve over 4G? As Qualcomm sums up, mainly three things:
- Much more speed: it can be several times faster than 4G. Downloading a large movie could take seconds instead of minutes.
- Very low latency: “latency” is the response time, the delay between requesting something and receiving it. 5G reduces it to thousandths of a second, almost instant.
- More connected devices: it can handle vast numbers of devices at once in a single area without getting saturated.
Why latency matters so much
Speed grabs attention, but for many future uses the key is low latency. A near-zero delay makes possible things that didn’t work well with 4G:
- Autonomous vehicles that react instantly.
- Remote surgery guided in real time.
- Smooth virtual and augmented reality.
- The so-called Internet of Things: thousands of connected sensors and devices (smart cities, factories, homes).
Is it dangerous? The myths
5G has generated hoaxes about supposed health risks. It’s worth clarifying: 5G uses radio waves, like the rest of wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, radio, 4G). International scientific and health bodies note that, within the established limits, there is no evidence it poses a health hazard. It’s the same class of non-ionizing waves we’ve been using for decades.
A foundation for the future
More than a simple speed boost for your phone, 5G is an infrastructure designed for what’s coming: connected cars, automated industry, smart cities, and millions of devices talking to each other. Its rollout is gradual and will take years to complete, but it lays the groundwork for the next wave of technology. In short, 5G isn’t just “faster internet on your phone”: it’s the ground on which much of the next decade’s technology will be built.
