What is artificial intelligence?

It’s in your favorite app’s recommendations, in voice assistants, in photo filters, and in the chats that reply like people. Artificial intelligence (AI) has gone from science fiction to being part of our daily lives. But what exactly is it? Let’s explain it clearly.

What artificial intelligence is

Artificial intelligence is the branch of computer science that seeks to create machines and programs capable of performing tasks that normally require human intelligence. We’re talking about things like recognizing images, understanding language, making decisions, translating languages, or playing chess.

It’s important to clear up a misunderstanding: today’s AI doesn’t “think” or have consciousness like a human being. It’s a set of very sophisticated systems designed to solve specific problems automatically and, often, very effectively.

How it learns: machine learning

The great engine of modern AI is machine learning. Instead of programming the machine with fixed rules for every situation, it’s shown a great many examples and it learns patterns on its own.

A simple example, as MIT Sloan illustrates: for a system to recognize cats in photos, you don’t explain what a cat is; you show it thousands of cat images until it learns to identify the common features. The more and better data it receives, the more it “learns” and the better it works. That’s why data is the fuel of AI.

Where you use it without realizing

AI is already built into a great many everyday tools, often without us noticing:

  • Recommendations for videos, music, or purchases.
  • Voice assistants that understand what you say.
  • Spam filters in email.
  • Facial recognition to unlock your phone.
  • Automatic translators.
  • Maps that calculate the best route with traffic.

Generative AI

In recent years, generative AI has surged: systems capable of creating new content (text, images, music, code) from a prompt. The chats that converse fluently or the tools that draw images from a description are its best-known examples. They’ve made AI accessible to anyone and have accelerated the debate about its impact.

Promises and precautions

AI offers enormous benefits —in medicine, science, productivity— but it also raises important challenges society must manage:

  • Bias: if it learns from biased data, it can repeat or amplify prejudice.
  • Privacy and the use of data.
  • Jobs: how it will transform work.
  • Misinformation: false content that’s hard to detect.

That’s why there’s increasing talk of responsible, well-regulated AI.

A powerful tool worth understanding

Artificial intelligence isn’t magic or a robotic mind from the movies: it’s a set of systems that learn from data to solve specific tasks, and that are already part of our lives. Understanding what it is and how it works lets us make the most of its advantages with judgment and be aware of its limits. In an era increasingly shaped by AI, understanding it is almost as important as knowing how to read.
