What is the greenhouse effect?

The natural phenomenon that makes Earth habitable and that, boosted by humans, is warming the planet. Explained clearly.

The greenhouse effect has a bad reputation, but the truth is that without it, we wouldn’t exist: Earth would be a ball of ice. The problem isn’t the effect itself, but that human activity is intensifying it. Understanding how it works is key to understanding climate change.

A natural and necessary phenomenon

The greenhouse effect is a natural process that keeps our planet warm. It works like this, as NASA summarizes:

  1. Sunlight reaches Earth and warms its surface.
  2. The surface radiates part of that heat back toward space as infrared radiation.
  3. Certain gases in the atmosphere trap a portion of that heat and send it back down, like a blanket.

Thanks to that atmospheric “coat,” the planet’s average temperature is around 15 °C (59 °F). Without the greenhouse effect, it would be about –18 °C (0 °F): far too cold for life as we know it. The name comes from glass greenhouses, which trap the sun’s heat for plants in a similar way.

The gases responsible

Not all gases trap heat. The so-called greenhouse gases are the ones that do this job. The main ones are:

  • Carbon dioxide (CO₂): the best known, released by burning fossil fuels.
  • Methane (CH₄): from livestock, landfills, and gas extraction.
  • Nitrous oxide and water vapor, among others.

The more of these gases there are in the atmosphere, the more heat is retained.

When the balance breaks

Here’s the crux of the current problem. The natural greenhouse effect is in balance; what has changed is that humans are adding enormous extra amounts of these gases. As the United Nations explains, since the Industrial Revolution, activities like burning coal, oil, and gas, or deforestation, have driven up the concentration of CO₂.

The result is a reinforced greenhouse effect: the atmosphere traps more heat than it should, and the global temperature rises. That’s what we call global warming, the driver of climate change.

Its consequences

That extra heat doesn’t stay put. Its effects include:

  • The melting of glaciers and ice caps, which raises sea levels.
  • More extreme weather events: heat waves, droughts, torrential rains.
  • Disruptions to ecosystems and agriculture.

What can be done

The good news is that the cause is known, so the solution is too: cut the emissions of greenhouse gases. That means using renewable energy, improving efficiency, protecting forests (which absorb CO₂), and changing habits in consumption and transport.

A coat that shouldn’t be too thick

The greenhouse effect isn’t the enemy: it’s what makes Earth habitable. The challenge is keeping that “coat” at the right thickness and not making it heavier with emissions that throw the climate off balance. Understanding it is the first step to acting, because caring for the atmosphere’s balance is, in the end, caring for everyone’s home.
