Why can we sometimes see the Moon by day?

The Moon doesn't only come out at night. Why we sometimes see it in broad daylight, what it has to do with its phases, and why it isn't always where you think.

We usually associate the Moon with the night: it comes out when the Sun sets and shines in the darkness. That’s why it’s so surprising to see it floating in the middle of a blue sky, in broad daylight. Is it something odd? A mistake? Not at all: the Moon by day is a completely normal phenomenon, and understanding it reveals fascinating things about our satellite.

A myth worth breaking

Let’s start by dispelling a very common misconception: the Moon doesn’t only come out at night. The belief that the Moon is “a night thing” is so ingrained that many people don’t notice it during the day. But in reality, the Moon spends as much time in the daytime sky as in the nighttime one. It just goes more unnoticed by day.

The Moon has no light of its own

To understand it, a key fact: the Moon doesn’t shine on its own. It’s not a light source like the Sun; what we see is sunlight reflected off its surface, like a huge pale mirror. That’s why its glow is faint compared to the Sun’s.

This means that, whenever part of the Moon is lit by the Sun and is above our horizon, we can see it, no matter whether it’s day or night on our side of the Earth.

The key: it rises and sets at different times

Here’s the heart of the matter. The Moon, like the Sun, rises and sets, but not at the same times every day. As the Moon orbits the Earth (over the course of a month), its rising and setting times shift by about 50 minutes each day.

As the Royal Observatory Greenwich explains, this means that, depending on its phase, the Moon is in the sky at very different times:

  • In some phases, the Moon is high during the day.
  • In others, it appears at night.

So, on many days of the month, the Moon is above the horizon while the sun is still up.

The role of the phases

The Moon’s phase is directly tied to when we see it:

  • The full moon rises just as the Sun sets and hides at dawn: that’s why it’s the most “nocturnal” and the one we never see by day.
  • The first quarter is usually seen well in the afternoon, still in daylight.
  • The last quarter is visible in the morning, after sunrise.

So seeing the Moon by day usually coincides with the first- or last-quarter phases.

Why it’s sometimes hard to see

If it’s there by day, why don’t we always notice it? Because of contrast. By day, the sky is very bright (from scattered sunlight, that intense blue), and the Moon, which reflects a much fainter light, blends in against that luminous background. It looks pale, almost transparent. At night, by contrast, it stands out against the dark sky and seems to shine brightly.

Look up during the day

The next time you’re outdoors on a clear day, try looking for the Moon: there’s a good chance it’s there, pale and discreet, in some corner of the blue sky. It’s no oddity or astronomical whim: it’s the natural consequence of the Moon orbiting the Earth and reflecting sunlight at all hours. Seeing it by day is simply giving it the attention we give it at night without thinking.
