How do dolphins sleep?
They sleep with half their brain awake and one eye open. That's how dolphins solve the impossible problem of sleeping without stopping breathing underwater.
Imagine you had to sleep without ever consciously stopping your breathing for even a second, and on top of that underwater, surrounded by predators. That’s exactly the problem dolphins face every night. Their solution is one of nature’s most astonishing marvels: they sleep with half their brain at a time.
The big problem: breathing is voluntary
Unlike us, dolphins don’t breathe automatically. Every breath of air, which they take through the blowhole on top of their head, is a conscious act: they have to decide to surface and breathe. If they fell fully asleep, as we humans do, they would stop breathing and drown.
On top of that, being warm-blooded animals in the water, they need to keep moving and stay alert to possible dangers. Deep sleep, quite simply, isn’t an option for them.
The solution: sleeping with half the brain
Nature solved the dilemma with a mechanism called unihemispheric sleep: dolphins sleep with one half of the brain while the other stays awake. According to NOAA, one hemisphere rests while the other stays active enough to:
- Control breathing and surface for air.
- Watch for predators.
- Keep moving and stay in contact with the group.
Every few hours, the hemispheres take turns: the one that was awake goes to sleep and vice versa. That way, over time, the whole brain manages to rest without the animal ever being fully unconscious.
One eye open, literally
This half-sleep has a fascinating, visible detail: dolphins often sleep with one eye open and the other closed. And it’s not random. The eye that stays open is generally the opposite to the hemisphere that’s asleep (the optic nerves cross over). The open eye keeps watching the surroundings while the other half of the brain rests.
What a sleeping dolphin looks like
A sleeping dolphin doesn’t lie still on the bottom. It usually:
- Swims slowly and in circles near the surface.
- Floats almost motionless just below the water, coming up to breathe from time to time (a behavior known as logging, for its resemblance to a drifting log).
Newborn calves and their mothers can go weeks without traditional deep sleep, staying active thanks to this same mechanism.
A perfect design for life at sea
Unihemispheric sleep is a brilliant example of how evolution solves impossible problems. Dolphins —and other cetaceans like whales— found a way to rest without giving up breathing or staying alert. The next time you see a dolphin swimming calmly at the surface, it might be doing something extraordinary: sleeping halfway, with one eye on the world.
