Why do we yawn?
It's not just about being sleepy or short of oxygen: science points to yawning cooling the brain. And why it's so contagious.
We all do it: right after waking, in a boring meeting, before falling asleep… and even just by reading the word “yawn.” It’s a universal gesture we share with dogs, cats, and even fish. But, surprisingly, science still doesn’t have a single answer for why we do it. What it does have are good clues.
The old oxygen idea (and why it’s shaky)
For a long time it was believed we yawn from a lack of oxygen: when we’re bored or tired we breathe more slowly, take in less oxygen, and the yawn would be a deep inhalation to compensate. It’s the most popular explanation and the one usually told to children, as KidsHealth notes.
The problem is that several studies cast doubt on it: giving someone more oxygen doesn’t reduce their yawning, nor does breathing air with more carbon dioxide increase it as you’d expect. So, although it sounds logical, oxygen doesn’t seem to be the main cause.
The best-supported theory: cooling the brain
The hypothesis gaining the most ground today, championed by researcher Andrew Gallup at Princeton, is that yawning acts as a brain thermostat. The intense movement of the jaw, neck, and throat muscles:
- Increases blood flow toward the head.
- Helps warmer venous blood drain away.
- The deep inhalation brings in cooler air.
The result is that more blood at a lower temperature reaches the brain, helping to cool it down. This fits a curious fact: we yawn more when the ambient temperature is around 20 °C (68 °F) and less when it’s very hot (above 37 °C / 98 °F). If the outside air is as warm as your head, cooling by yawning stops working.
Yawning also wakes us up
There’s a third piece. The facial stretch stimulates the carotid artery and triggers a small rise in heart rate and the release of hormones that help keep us alert. That’s why we yawn right at transition moments: on waking, before a test, or when fighting off sleep. As the Cleveland Clinic explains, it’s not a sign the brain is shutting down, but an attempt to reactivate it.
The big mystery: why is it contagious?
Here’s the most fascinating part. Seeing, hearing, or even reading about a yawn can trigger our own. Contagious yawning is linked to empathy and to so-called mirror neurons: the closer we feel to someone, the more likely we are to “catch” it. It’s no coincidence that many social animals share it too. In short, there are several theories about yawning that probably combine:
- Regulating brain temperature (the most supported today).
- Boosting alertness.
- Socially syncing us through empathy.
A small gesture with a lot of science behind it
That something so everyday still lacks a settled explanation says a lot about how complex the human body is. Most likely the yawn doesn’t have a single function, but several at once: it cools, it wakes, and it even connects us with others.
