How do chameleons change color?

Not just camouflage: pigments, nanocrystals and mood explain the chameleon's surprising color change.

Few animals carry a reputation as sticky as the chameleon’s: it changes color, yes, but almost everything we “know” about why is only half true. It does not blend in like a traffic light, nor copy any background. Its trick is a blend of skin chemistry and physics far subtler than it seems.

A skin of several layers

The classic explanation, reported by outlets such as RTVE, points to special cells called chromatophores, loaded with pigments and arranged in layers within the skin:

  • Top layer: red and yellow pigments.
  • Middle layer: white and blue tones.
  • Deep layer: dark pigments (melanin).

By concentrating or dispersing those pigments inside each cell, the animal makes some colors more visible and others less. It is like having several colored blinds stacked on top of each other and deciding which to open.

The real secret: crystals that move

The latest research added a surprising piece. As the biomimicry site AskNature explains, chameleons do not only play with pigments: they also have nanocrystals in their skin and can change the distance between them. By moving them closer or farther apart, the skin reflects different wavelengths of light, that is, different colors. This is called structural color, and it is the same principle that makes a butterfly’s wings or a peacock’s feathers shine.

An example makes it clear: when blue light bounces off the crystal layer and passes through the yellow pigment above, our eyes see green. By changing the crystal spacing, the same animal can shift from relaxed green to intense yellow or orange in seconds.

Why do they do it? (Not what you think)

Here is the big misunderstanding. Popular belief says the chameleon changes color to camouflage itself. As herpetology explainers such as Paleoherpetología clarify, blending in is usually a secondary benefit, not the main cause. The real drivers of color change are others:

  1. Mood and communication. A male that feels threatened or wants to court displays striking colors to “talk” to other chameleons. Vivid tones usually signal excitement or aggression; dull ones, calm or submission.
  2. Temperature regulation. Being cold-blooded, a chameleon can darken to absorb more sunlight when it is cold, or lighten to reflect it when it is hot.
  3. Camouflage. It does happen, but often it is a fortunate consequence of the changes above rather than a deliberate act of matching the background.

Eyes that help too

Color change does not work alone. Chameleons have eyes that move independently of each other, with a huge field of view. That constant watch over their surroundings lets them spot a predator in time —birds, snakes or small primates— or a rival, and respond by adjusting their coloration accordingly.

Much more than a party trick

The chameleon is not a chameleon in the way we use the word: it does not copy everything it sees. It combines layered pigments with nanocrystals it rearranges at will, and it does so mainly to communicate and regulate its temperature, not to hide. Next time you see one shift from green to orange, remember it is not changing costume: it is showing, on its skin, how it feels.
